In many parts of the world, hunting is a major source of food and clothing. It also sometimes comprises a part of the culture and social traditions. However, with increasing concerns regarding biodiversity loss and disruption to the ecosystem, it has become necessary to adopt sustainable approaches to hunting.

Sustainable hunting involves regulated, ethical, and controlled hunting. This includes a number of deliberate activities, such as hunting only as much as necessary and as cleanly as possible. It also involves following the rules of ecology, that is, protecting the healthiest specimens while harvesting the weak, ill, or older ones. This has long-term effects in improving the quality of the wildlife population.

Sustainable hunting also involves the use of more eco-friendly hunting gear. A significant percentage of gun owners in the US hunt with firearms, which leave debris behind that can harm the environment. However, innovations have led to environment-friendly cartridges. Lead bullets can be replaced with non-toxic alternatives for more sustainable hunting.
